ClayMotion pottery classes are taught by me, Dawn Whitehand, in a relaxed art studio environment in Central Ballarat. I have been a practising potter for over twenty years, and am passionate about all things clay.
I believe the plasticity of clay makes it a malleable and expressive medium, ideal for de-stressing and quietening the mind away from life’s busy hub-bub. The course focuses on providing students with the fundamental skills and knowledge of working with clay, through hands-on experience and practice in an encouraging atmosphere.
Wheelthrowing and handbuilding
Set projects or self initiated
$240.00 per term (materials and glazing not included: these costs will vary dependent on what a student makes)
Casual attendance $35 per session
Clay $16.00 per 10kg bag – available at the studio
Glazing $19.80 per kilo when ready to take home, for example – average coffee cup weighs 300 gm so this would cost $5.95 to take home when finished.
What you will learn: The course begins with the basic handbuilding techniques of pinching, coiling and slab building in which students can explore form and texture. Clay sculpting is also explored. As students become more confident the opportunity to learn wheel throwing, including wedging clay, centering, throwing cylindrical and bowl forms and turning, are also offered. As the course progresses an overview of decorative techniques and their application is explored as pieces are kiln fired and become available for glazing.
***Please note that our courses are designed for adults of 18+years old. Students 15 – 17 years old are welcome to enrol in the class if they are accompanied by an enrolled adult.
